Drugs for Hot Flashes
Hot flashes are one of the most common menopause symptoms women will experience. They occur because the body is unable to maintain a balanced body temperature. More information on hot flashes can be found here.
Hot flashes can be treated with traditional drugs such as:
- Hormone Replacement Therapy
- Clonidine (brand name - Catapres)
- Tibolone (brand name - Livial)
Hormone replacement therapy works to alleviate hot flashes by replacing estrogen produced by the ovaries with estrogen in the form of tablets, capsules, patches, pessaries or vaginal creams. It is a very effective way to treat hot flashes and convenient as it can alleviate other symptoms associated with menopause.
Clonidine is a drug used to treat hypertension or high blood pressure. As with many drugs, it can also be used for other indications, in this case, to treat hot flashes. The use of clonidine is often reserved for the treatment of hot flashes in women who are intolerant or unwilling to take hormone replacement.
Tibolone is a synthetic steroid derived from naturally occurring steroids. Tibolone used to treat menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, depression, vaginal irritation, loss of sexual desire and prevents postmenopausal osteoporosis. The advantage of tibolone over hormone replacement therapy is that it does not stimulate the womb lining, which means that it should not cause regular period-like bleeding. It also doesn’t have any bad effects on the endometrium and may even protect against breast cancer.
