Dong quai is thought to work by increasing or stabilizing the effects of female hormones. These hormones may include estrogen, progesterone and estrone, a less active form of estrogen produced after menopause.
What is Dong quai use for?
Dong quai was traditionally used in Chinese medicine mostly for the treatment of female disorders such as:
- irregular menstrual cycles

- menopause symptoms, especially hot flashes and vaginal dryness
It’s other, non-female related uses include:
- headaches
- blood pressure problems
- circulation problems
- liver problems
- insomnia
- constipation
- anemia
The most effective use of Dong quai is to combine it with other menopause herbs such as black cohosh, red clover, sage, soy extracts or wild yam extracts. Dong quai will work synergistically with these other menopause herbs to provide greater relief of menopause symptoms, especially hot flashes and vaginal dryness.
