Premature Menopause
Premature menopause, as its name suggests, occurs when a woman reaches menopause (has her last menstrual period) before the usual age of 45 to 60 years old, typically before 40 years old.
Most women will not experience premature menopause, but natural menopause, where the natural process of aging is the cause of their menopause. Premature menopause may be caused by:
- hereditary factors
- smoking
- exposure to radiation
- exposure to chemotherapy
Some surgical procedures that interrupt the blood supply to ovaries may also be associated with premature menopause.

I read an article saying that scientists have found a premature menopause gene. The gene was called FOXL2 and its affects the eyelids and ovaries (weird combination, I know). The mutated gene causes an eyelid defect in babies and ovarian failure in adult females.
I guess it could explain the hereditary factors.
