Premenopause is the first menopause stage a woman will experience in her life. Premenopause refers to a woman’s reproductive or fertile life, from the first menstrual period to the last.

It is sometimes misused to describe the years immediately before menopause, where a woman experiences menopause symptoms. That stage is correctly called perimenopause, and not premenopause.

Premenopause is also occasionally and inaccurately used to describe a menopause type called premature menopause.
