Drug Free Management
Drug free management of menopause needs be considered by all women, including those who have reached menopause and those reaching menopause.
Women can improve and maintain their health by:
- getting educated about menopause
- considering contraception
- stopping smoking
- adopting a healthy menopause diet
- getting support
- exercising regularly
Menopause education is vitally important as it will teach you how to manage the transition and any possible menopause symptoms.
Contraception and menopause is one area that women may misunderstand. Women need to use some form of contraception for up to one year after their last menstrual period. Hormone replacement therapy is NOT a form of contraception.
Smoking cessation has many positive health effects, not only for a woman’s health after menopause. It can reduce the risk of:
- osteoporosis
- lung diseases like bronchitis and emphysema
- heart attacks
- strokes
- cancer
- ulcers
Adopting a healthy diet can improve your health, reduce your risk of developing medical conditions, prevent weight gain and reduce menopause symptoms.
The transition into menopause can be stressful and exhausting. Getting support and help from family, friends or an experienced counsellor can ease the stress of the transition.
Exercising regularly will prevent any weight gain and development of medical conditions. Aim to get at least 20 minutes of exercise at least 5 times a week.

There is a history of cancer - uterine, breast, in my family, so I don’t want to go onto hormone replacement therapy. I’m having periodic problems with hot flushes, often waking during the night, feeling properly ‘benoud’. I also experience symptoms during the day. I had a hysterectomy a few years ago for medical reasons (not cancer) but the ovaries were left in. I’m 53 years old.
