Fatigue and Tiredness

What is fatigues and tiredness?

Menopause can cause emotional changes in women. One such emotional change is the feeling of fatigue and tiredness. The changes in female hormones is the most likely responsible for fatigue and tiredness, as well as most other menopause symptoms.

How is fatigue and tiredness treated?

Hormone therapy may combat fatigue and tiredness caused by menopause. Other traditional drugs such as caffeine may also be used, however they are not recommended as they have unpleasant and unhealthy side effects.

Natural therapies for fatigue and tiredness includes herbs, vitamins and minerals such as:

  • Vitamin B complex
  • Multivitamin
  • Iron and Vitamin C
  • Gotu Kola
  • Damiana
  • Oats
  • Ginseng

Vitamin B complex are a set of essential nutrients used in metabolic processes. It helps to metabolize food into energy, giving the user more energy and relieving fatigue and tiredness. Vitamin B complex is also useful in times of stress as it helps you to cope with stress.

A multivitamin may be useful to combat fatigue in cases where an imbalanced diet is causing a lack of essential vitamins and minerals for optimal functioning of the nervous system.

Iron supplements or from food may provide relief from fatigue and lethargy due to iron deficiency. This is essential mineral is used in red blood cells to carry oxygen around the body. Low iron levels results in less oxygen available to organs causing reduced metabolic rate and fatigue. Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin taken in conjunction with iron to enhance the absorption of iron.

Gotu kola and damiana are nervous system tonics that provides relief of fatigue and mild anxiety. Gotu kola was traditional used as an adaptogen. An adaptogen is an innocuous substance considered to have non-specific, normalizing action. Gotu kola has similar actions to ginseng, another herb used to treat fatigue and exhaustion.

Oats are used to support the nervous system and is also used to relieve nervous debility, fatigue and exhaustion.

Ginseng RootGinseng is another adaptogen similar to Gotu kola. It improves energy production by its action on the adrenal glands. Ginseng is used to:

  • enhance the body’s ability to cope with stress
  • increase mental alertness
  • relieve fatigue and tiredness
  • increase stamina and endurance

Side effects of ginseng are rare, but need to be considered. Side effects include:

  • mild diarrhea
  • insomnia and sleeplessness
  • skin rashes
  • breast tenderness
  • abnormal menstrual bleeding

Im just beginning to have some symptoms of menopause (perimenopause at 50.5 years old). I really notice the tiredness, and even when i just wake up.
    Its horrible!!!!!

  3. Marie Phillips Says:

I am 46 years old. I did not have a period for 5 months, then I had another one, and with it, I felt sick, and very, very tired. It seemed that I could not get enough rest. Does anyone know something natural that I can do to control this feeling? I am not into taking estrogen.

  4. Char B. Says:

I’m 54 and feel “exhausted.” I long for a “crones year” away from responsibilities! And if someone had said to take better care in early life to be ready for this “change,” I’d have listened! But anyway, I take Siberian Ginseng for energy, essential oils (Udo’s oil & Primrose) for dryness, wild yam for nightly aches, motherwort (a really good one) for heat & tension, and I’m thinking of taking an adrenal glandular for further strength & support. The thyroid & adrenals are usually depleted by menopause, but it’s hard to find a whole thyroid glandular, anymore,
organic, New Zealand sources are best.

  5. Cathi Drost Says:

Hi- I am into my 3′d yr. of menopause, and I am really feeling it now. I am so tired, and listless—- I am wondering if anyone has tried the ‘bio-identicals’ ? I am taking vit. E;Vit.C; Primrose oil; and Estrovan over the counter. Nothing seems to be working this year. It doesn;t help that my father died of a heart attack in Nov. 07, which took the wind out of my sails, and added to the mix. I am athletic, so I run daily, lift weights, eat good– etc. but to no avail. I am about ready to call my DR. in the morning, but if anyone has any advice or suggestions I am all ears!
    Thanks
    Cath

  6. Julie Blanchard Says:

I am 51, menopausal and suffer from numerous aches and tiredness.I don’t take vitamin supplements but I have been eating foods high in anti-oxidents e.g blueberries, raspberries, broccolli etc and have started to feel a lot better, I have also cut out the foods with a high sugar content and drink decaffinated tea. I have recently started degree course with the OU, which I am finding keeps my mind occupied and I do a lot of walking. My 22 years old daughter Claire and I did Race For Life three-legged for Cancer Research UK. I hope this will be helpful to others suffering with menopausal sysmptoms.

  7. Libbett Watson Says:

I have been suffering with menopausal symptoms for about six years (I am 58). One of my main complaints is lack of stamina. My muscles can’t recover after the least exertion. I can barely do my own shopping. I used to exercise vigorously every day. Now all I can do is some yoga and stretching. I can’t travel and have had to quit working. I take bio-identical hormones. They help some, but no HRT has really relieved the worst symptoms–and I have them all, including hot flashes, mood swings, indigestion, fatigue, etc. I sympathize with everyone. This is NOT FUN!! Wish I had a remedy. I’ve tried everything from accupuncture to vitamins. I live from day to day.

  8. Mia Says:

I am 50 in January and have been peri-menopausal for 12 months. I tried oestrogen/progesterone HRT but couldn’t stand having PMT and periods again!! I’d rather have the hot sweats! I am so exhausted all the time though, and feel unable to face the thought of carrying on in my work. I am the manager of a specialist cancer service which can be quite stressful! I have always been able to cope in the past but now find it very difficult to deal with challenging colleagues! A good description is that I feel vulnerable and lacking in self confidence. I don’t feel I have the reserves to draw from anymore. Saturdays are just wiped out with exhaustion from the stresses of the week and I wonder how other female colleagues of a similar age, and in more or equally stressful roles, are able to cope. Does anyone else feel that the day to day demands are hard to meet? I can’t believe how I used to cope with juggling children, work and a home!! Help! Just to know I’m not on my own would be fab! Other women must just be so good at hiding how they feel - or maybe I’m just a wuss!

  9. Penny Faulkner Says:

I understand completely Mia, have felt exactly the same, have stayed on the HRT because could not cope with the tiredness, depression and emotional side effects of beign menapausal. Have had to reduce my working hours as need some relaxation time. Like you the whole weekend can be busy and I am exhuasted monday morning. Could you possibly reduce your working week, it really helps you to feel more relaxed.

  10. Karen Saunders Says:

I’m 55 and dealing with menopause also. Have tried all natural supplements including bio-identical hormone cream. I recently decided to give it all away and am now taking Adapten [made by Metagenics, which is a”Rhemannia Complex for Nervous Exhaustion”]. This was prescribed by a naturopath to assist me wean off antidepressants. Sometimes, it’s available at certain chemists altho my chiro can order it as it’s a ‘practitioner’ brand. Because I still felt stressed & emotional at times, I bought Blackmores Mega B formula. I started to feel much better tho at times still a little emotional, depending on what was happening in my life. I recently ran out of the Mega B and now can’t seem to get out of bed. I feel physically tired and exhausted for most of the day and simply want to go straight to bed when I get home from work! So I’m going to buy another Mega B today. I hope this helps others but the problem with menopause and life generally, is it’s a very personal experience. So much depends on what is happening in your life. I personally have had enormous support from:
    Meditation, esp guided meditation CDs;
Reading books on positive thinking and the like. I find it’s just so easy to be negative as we have had that mindset from a very early age. ATM I’m reading Echart Tolle’s The Power of Now and when I impliment his teachings, I feel good. The more positives we practice, the better we feel.
Also my friend & I have started drinking GABA tea which is a Japanese tea which they say helps many problems. I have noticed a pleasant change since drinking this tea 2-3 times a day. I seem to feel happier with life.
Another issue for me is allergies. My allergies have grown so much worse and I believe that can have a negative affect on women of our age. I’m going to an allergy elimination clinic and am using a sinus wash each day [recommended by the naturopath at the clinic] and am starting to feel human again.
I too would like to hear back from anyone that may be interested. Good luck!

I just turned 44 years and I am feeling the same as all of you, exhausted, tired, out of energy. I have 4 kids and all boys. I have lost a 5 year old daughter 8 years ago too. I am in menopause right now and it is a real big change in feeling so tired and fatigue as soon as I do an extra chore. I get less sleep some nights and that makes it worse. I am taking multivitamins, just started ‘MENO-EASE”, a natural pill and vitamin B, but no matter waht I take, the fatigued, tired, drained days still exists. I work full time as well. Anyone that has anything that can boost some more energy would really be helpfull

  12. barbara hurd Says:

I have been having problems for about 5months with the chronic fatigue that I have been reading about from all you other ladies of a certain age. The other symptoms, hot flushes, night sweats and palpitations pale in comparison and I can put up with these somewhat. I am going to try some of the things that you have taken and see if this works. Like yourselves, I am not going to consider HRT.

  13. Karen Says:

Bebe, have you had your thyroid checked for hypothyroidism ? Chronic tiredness is a classic symptom.

  14. shirl Says:

i am so exhausted and fatigued. Everything annoys me. I may have 2 - 3 decent days per month that i feel good, or better. I have to work and somedays don’t even know how im gonna get thru it. I wake up exhausted even if I sleep, and I wake up ALOT at night. Anyone else like this? I have an appt with a bioidential hormone doctor on 5/12. Just did my blood and saliva tests, i hope they find something to help me, my quality of life has gone down the drain… thanks for listening!

  15. Karen Kowald Says:

    Hi
I just sent this link to my husband. He rolls his eyes when I go to bed at 8.
I am 52 , turned it last week and have been suffering menopause for 2 years. I have tried everything from Western treatments to Chinese remedies , I have just accepted this as part of life, but emotional support would be nice! I’ve vented now, but I see I am not alone…:)

  16. Sandra Burt Says:

Hi to all - have just sat down to try and find some help and info on the web - seems the only solution sometimes, when there is no other option available - I started the menopause about 5 years ago and having had the whole gambit of ‘wonderful’ side effects have finally succumbed to HRT - I always swore I wouldn’t, I would cope with it in natural ways, but the frustration of nothing really helping and at my wits end of bad moods, tiredness, hot flushes, night sweats which resulted in no sleep to boot - I gave in and started Estrofem about 3 years ago. This has helped with the flushes, night sweats and the mood imbalance, but it definitely hasn’t helped with the severe tiredness and fatigue and I just wanted to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all that have written to this site - having read the above makes me feel a little more normal - I thought I was going slightly mad and neurotic, as how could I possibly feel so tired? Especially when getting out of bed first thing in the morning - this for someone who is always so energetic and doing stuff is really tough. So thank you for your comments - makes me feel much better. I agree with previous person about Ekert Tolle - read this it will help you - wonderful teachings for now and the rest of your life - living in the now is all we have. A virtual hug to you all out there and I guess there will come a time when it will pass and we can get on with our lives.

  17. Janice Mann Says:

I am 56 and in the later stages of menopause and am just so very very tired!! I dream of going back to bed when I have only been awake a couple of hours. Like the previous writers I dont know how I managed to look after 4 children and go to work. I enjoy my busy job as a GPs secretary, but have to have a catnap as soon as I get home. Also the itchy skin. I constantly feel as though ants are crawling over me and it does get you down. And I have just remembered how in the last year my confidence has took a battering. I have panic attacks for no obvious reason.

On the outside I look the same - actually not bad for 56 - but inside I am an exhausted, itchy, quivering wreck!

  18. margarita Says:

Hello, l could spend my whole life in bed. l just don”t want to do nothing at all. So tired and dizzy all day log. Is it normal? l feel so bad and sad. Always crying, feeling so useless! l hope this will end soon! l”m in my mid 50″

  19. Carole Heath Says:

I can understand the previous comments from many of these ladies, the tiredness I suffer with myself since becoming menopausal, my doctor said at nearly 62 years old the symptoms of the menopause should be gone, I beg to differ, you know your own body and how you feel, without sounding sexist which I am not many male doctor’s arent that up on this subject and even female doctor’s don’t know that much about it either I have found, sometimes it is a closed book to the person suffering with the symptoms themselves it is so complex I think. Some days I feel so alive and can clean the house out, another day I wake up completely weary, I don’t sleep that well now so that doesn’t help really. But I have managed to cope with that. I keep active and do swimming and aqua aerobics at my local pool, I walk a lot. I also eat healthy and take a course of tablets for the menopause but the tiredness can be very depressing at times. have any of you ladies tried St John’s Wort it can help to lift your mood I have found, the previous comment from Margarita I know how she feels but I think staying in bed sometimes makes you feel worse and more unhappy lets hope her dilemma improves soon likewise all the other people who have left a comment. I get very crabby and can’t be bothered with anything at times it is all to do with the menopause, don’t worry ladies it will improve with time, my symptoms have got better than they were, good luck to you all

  20. Sarah Ward Says:

Oh dear! Hello Ladies! I see we are legion! I am 51 and have just started the menopause for real. Copious hot flushes, I’m an insomniac anyway and gave in to Phenergan a while ago to help me sleep. Just can’t cope without sleep. Like others, even after a reasonable night I sometimes wake feeling exhausted. I don’t work either! Gave it up a year ago and moved to Dubai with my new husband. I have always been active, worked as a belly dancer for many years, then started teaching it. Will hopefully be starting that again in September. That is a great therapy ladies! It can help relieve stress, lift the spirits, increase your confidence and of course it’s a really FUN way to exercise! I swim and use the gym, do yoga, meditate…all these things help. I took Agnus Castus for years for PMT which was absolutely brilliant. Stopped taking it because I wanted to up the anti re. menopause and now take Viridians Female Herbal Complex. Not sure how much it helps, so started taking a Solgar Herbal Female Complex as well which has slightly different ingredients, including Soy Isoflavones (I’ve heard this is brilliant for flushes) and Agnus Castus, which I always swore by! I have been looking for Agnus Castus liquid in Dubai but can’t find it…..maybe it would do the trick again. I don’t have children, some say it makes the menopause worse…..? Ugh! However, good luck, lovely ladies….hope something here helps someone. May the Force be with you! x

  21. margarita Says:

To Carol and all the ladies suffering from this terrible menopause! l”m less sad just knowing l”m not alone! l “ve just started making excercise and feeling better. A big, big, hug to you all. Someday we will be happy again, like we used to be…. l”m sure!

  22. Tracy Says:

I am so glad to have found this site, I have been going through menopause for 2 years and I have noticed lately that I am even more tired and that even during the work day it is all I can do not to lay my head on my desk. Better yet, even driving home and sitting at a red light, I feel if I closed my eyes for one second that I would completely go out. I hate this feeling and I feel so moody. I hate that this is affecting my family and work.

  24. andrea Says:

    Hi,

I’m 27 years old and feel fatigue a few days out of the month. There are some days where I’m moody and have hard time getting out of bed. I am a stay home mom of a 3 and 4 year old and don’t feel at my best sometimes. I’m very young and don’t know what it could be? any info?

  25. Osnat Lippa Says:

To all you ladies, it’s great to hear your stories. I’m going to be fifty in two weeks and my symptoms have just escalated. I have started feeling some days real fatigue where I feel I cannot keep my eyes open, my sleep is much more desruptive, I feel moddy, irritable, anxious and there are very few days when I feel right. I have heard that when you are about to hit menopause the hormones fluctuate the worse and therefore the symptoms are really terrible. What I find so difficult is that before I had days before my period that I knew I feel bad but now these days are all over the month. I have started taking Estroven just the other day and will be bakc at the Gym from tomorrow after the summer holidays are over and hope that this combination will help alleviate these horrible symptoms.

  27. Carol Says:

Hi all, At 55 I’ve been postmenopausal for 3-4years but apart from hot flushes, etc, which phytosoya helped with, it occurred to me that I was feeling more and more fatigued. I force myself to get on with life but went to Docs to get my thyroid levels checked, I’ve have been hypothroid for many years and take thryoxine to correct deficiency. The blood tests came back as ‘normal’ and she suggested counselling, was there anything stressing me. Yes, the tiredness! I came home thinking I was on my own and just going to have to face I am getting older. Having found this website I realise I am not alone and will carry on looking for a natural remedy to try to relieve the weariness I’m feeling. Thank you everyone for all your comments.

Hi all, I had a hysterectomy 10 years ago t the age of 32 and started taking 1.25 of premarin hrt straight way.
Over the last 12 mths I have suffered with tiredness, fatigue, joint pain and headaches. Following numerous visits to the doctor and standard blood tests later, I was told my blood tests were normal therefore, there was nothing wrong and was advised to take vitamin b and drink red bull.
I honestly thought I was going Crazy, I feel so much better just by reading everyones comments.
thank you all so very much x

I am 53 Haven’t had a period for2 yrs. about 7 months ago had a retinal detachment. Was depressed from that ,so i thought that was my problem but have learned it is meno. So tired and irritable don’t want to do anything.Started on amberen today. I guess i’m hoping for a miracle.

  32. Caroline Says:

Oh I’m SO GLAD to have found you all; I thought it was just me …! I’m 51 and my periods have started to become more erratic. Did start having hot flushes and night sweats but found a wonderful homeopath on the recommendation of a slightly older friend (who basically made me go to see her since I didn’t believe in it) and, to my astonishment, both symptoms stopped (and haven’t reappeared).

However, I’m still always tired and sometimes irritable - I have no patience and seem unable to be tolerant. My house is a complete tip. My garden is a tapestry of weeds. I’ve started decorating (have scraped one wall) and can’t find the energy to do any more. I’m putting on weight constantly, and have no energy to do exercise. I can’t be bothered with any of it!

  33. Laraine Says:

I am 56 and got up this morning and decided I couldn’t put up with this fatique anymore, so I would look up on the net to get some answers when I arrived on this site and read all your comments and realised I am (unhappily) normal. It would appear that there is no real cure for this stage of our lives otherwise there would have been someone out there who would have been happy to give us the cure. Added to all the other comments on the symptons, which started with my menopause in my early forties, my hair is now starting to thin badly adding to the depression. I’m sorry to say this forum hasn’t cheered me up at all as I was desperate for some help, knowing this is the way life is going to be from now on is gutting.

  34. Denise Says:

I’m 47 . My doctor said all my test came back normal but i was still having all these problems . I just started Amberen on October 14, hope it will help with hot flashes, sadness and a number of other problems , will keep you updated on how it is working.

  35. Wendy Says:

I had a total hysterectomy at 37, the girl that went into theartre didn’t come out with me. I’m now 49 and have been on a roller coaster of physical and emotional challenges since. the only times I feel well is if I have a diet nothing man made and nothing that creates heat in my body (onions chilli garlic spices ect) and homeopathy. While this works very well it’s exspensive and requires a lot of disipline. Hoping by writing this I’ll be able to get back on track.

  36. maria Says:

I cried when I came across this site, and read what other women have said! Such a relief to discover I am not alone. I was beginning to think, in spite of a check up with my doctor, that perhaps I have a touch of the terminals !
Thankyou Caroline for telling us that your house is a tip and your garden a tapestry of weeds…now I dont feel so alone ! Every day I promise I will clean my house, and every day I end up sleeping instead. I used to love gardening, and now just cant do it. I havent the energy. If I try to force myself, I feel terrible and shakey.
I take Floradix liquid and good quality fish oils, among other vit/min supplements, and I also take 5htp (tryptophan) amd st Johns Wort for depression, after my naturopath recommended them, and they seem to work really well together. So I am cheerful (!), but Sooooo tired. I cant believe the menopause could have changed me so much. I used to be so industrious ! Thankyou all so much for your advice. I am going to focus on meditation and positive thinking now. Self belief, and our thoughts, are so powerful, and its easy to forget that. Also, reading of other womens experiences has made me feel calmer. I can accept all this more easily and see it as a passing phase if I am not alone in it !

  37. Josie! Says:

    Hello Ladies,

Okay….i should begin with i am postmenopausal now for
three years it has been quite bad and especially this year
2009. This past year the fatique and exhaustion began,
i don’t know what to do anymore. Most of the times i am
indoors, everything is difficult to do, such as getting washed
dressed, cleaning my Condo, making my meals. What is
so upsetting is that no one i know around my age can relate to what is happening to me. So, consequently i feel
    very alone and helpless.

All my Life i have had alot of energy…cutting the grass front and back. Shoveling snow and my neighbors, always
trying to help others that were growing old and unable to
carry their groceries. I have always enjoyed helping others.
Now it is December 2009 my friends are going to a Xmas
party i cannot attend as i just am not up to it. Made an apt
with the hairdresser yesterday….but had to cancel it. I just
hate the way i look and feel. I have always felt attractive
and good about my self. Although for the last 3 years my
hair started falling out and i have a constant fog in my head
which only adds to my frustration and have not been getting out for walks. I used to power walk for about 3 years in all sorts of weather and felt very good …but as
time progressed wit menop everything has come to a halt.

I don’t know how woman can work and feel exhausted all
the time. I know i am not lazy at all. But this year i keep
questioning myself and beating myself up i just donot like
me anymore. I feel bad for my kids they are married and
i no longer call them over for dinner as i used to. I have
also noticed that they don’t call me when i am this way…
i would love to have their support and encourage me and
tell me they Love their Mother. I, really do feel alone and
the physical changes in me no get up and go i just want to
sit down and watch TV….i never was a couch potatoe and
never did watch television in the day time. I am a mess
and need desperately for someone to get in touch with me.

It seems that many woman on this site are not doing all that well on whatever they have tried to do. I was thinking
of possibly going to see a Accupuncture in Mississauga Ontario where i reside. I donot take HRT and do take vitamins which i purchase through Amway they are expensive they did help a year ago…..however now not working for me.

So please if you have a few minutes to spare i would so
appreciate hearing from you and knowing how you are
    coping.

Warm Regards to all …..how terrible to have this occur to
    many woman…..

    Sincerely, Josie

  38. Vivienne Wharton Says:

Hi Ladies, I am just like everyone here…at my wit´s end with feeling tired, aching joints, not feeling like s…x and being grumpy and overthinking things. I had breast cancer 6 years ago and so cannot take HRT or any other supplement. My consultant said that my quality of life is more important and that I could take a chance and take a small dose but I am convinced that when i was given HRT for perimenopausal symptoms it brought the cancer on. My Mother was on HRT for 10 yrs and died of breast cancer, so I am determined to put up with the symptoms. the problem is that i worry my symptoms may be something worse but having read all the comments (sadly) I realise it is all normal.

On the positive side I do have good weeks and as a Pilates / Yoga teacher and host of a retreat for Yoga, Pilates and art I find that it all helps. The good diet, the books and the positive thinking keep me going but it is tough. I would say try all these things if you can as it definitely improves the symptoms but it is hard to get motivated when you feel like this. I live in spain in the sunshine (although excessive heat makes it worse). It occured to me that having just got over christmas, drinking and eating the wrong things, stress of visitors, lack of Pilates and Yoga for 3 weeks now has exacerbated the symptoms and that is why I am here. so reading these comments has helped in a way as it has made me realise what works and what doesn´t. Good luck everyone, I really think the natural things like meditation and Yoga, healthy eating help if you can give it a try.

  39. Stephanie Says:

I told my husband that I needed to look online for women who might be feeling this awful fatigue. I am 52 yrs old and have Debilitating fatigue. Then I have to top this off with in 2003 I had double heart valve replacement and an aortic aneurysm that was fixed with a graft.
Gosh it was sooooo good to read all about the total fatigue!!!!!!
This is still a part of life that most women don’t want to talk about! It’s like the dark ages. And the women that do talk seem to not have the tiredness to the degree I have it and so many of you have. The women I talk to have flown thru menopause with little or no trouble and then one day have not had a period in a year!!!! I just want to scream!! I’m sorry but some of us are really given a full plate and others just sorry of get an appetizer size helping of this frustrating part of life!!
I have been told by all sorts of doctors that maybe it’s all kinds of things like sleep apnea, thyroid problems, etc. WHY in 2010 can doctors NOT know that this tiredness is a pretty common thing with menopause. This is frustrating that they don’t know this!!! ahhhhhh
I am so grateful to have found this website and to read all the letters that spoke of the extreme tiredness. Thank you so much for writing and sharing. I guess that is how we help one another ….. in sharing a common bond.
It is depressing to not be able what I use to do. I too had a family, cook everynight, took care of our home, painted, sold my paintings, did the bookkeeping for our business, ETC and now I can barely get out of bed.
My heart THANK YOU GOD seem ok, and I truly believe that alot of my problem is the menopause phase that I am in.
I am still having a period about every3-4 months. This has been going on for about a year now. And the first couple of days are very heavy as in 2 xsuper tampons and an elderly diaper at night. The dr. thought this was pretty mild compared to some stories!
Just reading your stories has made me feel like I am not so alone. Thank you for sharing and like someone said I guess when we get desperate we go looking to the internet!!!
Wow am I glad I did that today.
